Assaying gold is a critical process that helps determine the exact content of gold in a sample, which directly impacts its value. Whether you're testing gold from a mining operation, scrap gold for recycling, or gold bars for trading, selecting the right assay method and ensuring rigorous quality assurance practices is essential for obtaining accurate and reliable results.

General Steps in Assaying Gold

  1. Sample Collection:

    • Gold samples are often collected in bulk, especially from mining operations. A representative sample is taken from a larger batch to ensure accurate assay results.
    • Samples may need to be finely ground or powdered to ensure consistency and uniformity in testing.
  2. Preparation of Sample:

    • The sample may need to undergo physical or chemical treatments (e.g., drying, grinding, or dissolving) depending on the assay method.
  3. Analysis:

    • The chosen assay method (fire assay, XRF, etc.) is applied to the sample to determine the gold content.
  4. Result Interpretation:

    • The results of the assay are analyzed to determine the percentage of gold in the sample, typically expressed in parts per thousand (ppt) or karats (for jewelry-grade gold).
  5. Reporting:

    • The assay results are documented and reported, typically in a certificate of analysis, which provides details on the sample's composition.
